We have all been there before. One minute it's just another normal day, and then the next it's days until Halloween, your house looks as though it's stuck in September, and your neighbors have a fog machine. Do not panic! You don't need to plan a week of decorating or spend a fortune to make your house spooky. With one afternoon and a few items you may already have on hand, you can do it in a day.
Here are a few suggestions if you want your house to have some spook factor but have limited time.
1. Begin With Lighting

If you have one idea to try, make sure it's this one.
Change your regular light bulbs to orange, purple, or green. Don't you have colored light bulbs? Now, cover the lampshade with colored fabric or colored tissue paper, but be sure not to cover the bulbs since they are hot. Switch off the lights hanging from the ceiling and decorate your room with candles and/or battery-operated tea lights. Place them on mantles, windowsills, and even stair steps. Real flames look good, but non-flammable alternatives are better around children and pets.
2. Paper Bats in Twenty Minutes

Black construction paper, scissors, and some tape. That's all you need.
Draw an outline of one bat, cut it out, and trace it on other pieces of paper to get many bats. Fold each bat's wings slightly to give it a flying look, then stick them on the wall in a diagonal formation, with smaller and smaller bats moving "away." They look fabulous hanging in a doorway or along a staircase, but they cost way less than they should. Don't have construction paper? Just use black garbage bags or old T-shirts.
3. Make Ghost Lanterns Out of Mason Jars

Any clear jars or glass containers from your kitchen will do. Just wrap them with white tissue paper or gauze and add some black paper eyes and a small mouth. Put a tea light in it, and you'll get a cheap glowing ghost.
Put them around a step of your porch, on the shelves in your bookcase, or on the table. They work best when you use different-sized jars.
4. Make Cobwebs without Making a Mess

Ready-made, store-bought cobwebs are always great, but you can easily go overboard. What you need to do is stretch them apart until you get thin wisps and hang them in the corners, on picture frames, and banisters.
No cobwebs? Just pull apart cotton balls until they become thread-like or use black yarn and white string to make your own web between the chairs or through the windows. Hang a couple of plastic spiders or cut them out of black paper and you're ready to go. A couple of well-placed cobwebs are scarier than a house covered with them.
5. Dress Up the Front Door

Because the door is the first thing trick-or-treaters and your guests will see when they arrive, decorate it accordingly. Here are three easy ways to do so:
Mummy door – cover the door with strips of white tape, gauze, or torn bedsheet, leaving an opening for two pairs of googly or paper eyes.
Monster door – cut a mouth with sharp teeth from white and black paper, attach the eyes above, and your door will "eat" everybody who comes through.
Remove the old decoration and use black feathers, plastic spiders, and orange ribbons for the wreath instead.
All three tasks will take you less than one hour to complete.
6. Painting Pumpkins (or Not Carving Them)

Carving pumpkins is time-consuming, but you still have other options. One option is to paint the pumpkins black, white, and gold using acrylic paint, or draw faces on them with permanent markers. Those who don't want to get dirty can use felt elements and attach them to the pumpkins, along with googly eyes.
Use an odd number of pumpkins (three or five) and place them at different heights. Use several pumpkins placed above an overturned bucket or books wrapped with dark
7. Create a Spooky Table Arrangement

If you have guests coming over or want to create a Halloween atmosphere on your dining table, it will take about thirty minutes to prepare everything. Cover the table with a black tablecloth or runner (any dark sheet works) and place candles, small pumpkins, and branches or twigs from your garden.
8. Utilize What You Have at Hand

Check around your house for things you can reuse to make Halloween decorations. You could use old photo frames to put up scary silhouette images printed on paper or even black paper with cat or witch cutouts.. Dead branches sprayed black and put into a vase can serve as a unique centerpiece.
Taking family photos and replacing them with old-fashioned pictures (in black and white and a little torn) is one way to create a haunted-house effect.
Another example includes black-covered books stacked in a corner, an old candlestick, and a mirror with something draped partially over it.
9. Add Sound and Smell

This is often overlooked, but it’s what turns your decoration into an experience. Play spooky music or a track with the sound of a door opening. For the smell, boil orange peel, cinnamon sticks, and cloves in a saucepan. It will definitely give you the smell of autumn and make your house cozy and mysterious.
A Realistic Decorating Plan for a Day
In case you decide to do everything in a day, the following is how you would plan the schedule:
Morning: Gather your supplies from home and buy anything you're missing, such as tape, black paper, candles, and cut-out bats.
Afternoon: Decorate the door, ghost jars, and the pumpkins. Hang the webs and prepare the table scene.
Evening: Put up the lights, play the music, and admire the results from outside the house.
